Dana Whitlock, Esq. · Brooklyn Heights
I am a family lawyer and mediator who believes most families do better outside a courtroom, and who will go into one when that is what it takes.

You and your spouse, one neutral, and an agreement you both wrote. The least expensive route, and the one that keeps you in charge.
Each of you has a lawyer, everyone signs an agreement not to litigate, and the work happens at a table rather than in a courtroom.
Sometimes the other side will not negotiate in good faith. Then you need someone who knows the Kings County Supreme Court and is not afraid of it.
Flat fees where the work is predictable. Hourly, with an estimate, where it is not. Either way you receive a written engagement letter that sets out exactly what is covered before a dollar is charged.
Flat fees exclude court filing fees and third-party costs, which are itemised in the engagement letter. Fees current as of this year and subject to change for new matters.
Thirty minutes, no charge. You tell me where things stand; I tell you honestly which route makes sense and what it costs.
Scope, fee and what happens if circumstances change - in plain English, signed by both of us.
Financial statements, the children's schedules, the house. I collect it once, so you do not repeat yourself.
Mediation sessions, a collaborative table, or a filing in Kings County - whichever we agreed on.
I have practised family law in Brooklyn since 2012, first at a litigation firm and, since 2018, on my own. I trained as a mediator because I watched too many families spend their children's college funds on a fight nobody won. I still litigate when I must; I would rather not.
“Dana kept us talking when we couldn't stand to be in the same room. Our daughters never saw a courtroom.”
“She told me on the first call what it would cost and it cost that. I did not know lawyers did that.”
Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome. Statements are shared with permission; names withheld.
In person in Brooklyn Heights, or by video. Evenings available twice a week.
