Solicitors and other professional clients instruct through the clerks, who will discuss availability, seniority and fees, and propose the right barrister for the matter.
Members marked Public Access are accredited to accept instructions directly from members of the public and businesses without a solicitor, under the Bar Standards Board's Public Access rules. The clerks will tell you whether your matter is suitable.
Members charge by hourly rate or agreed fixed fee. Guideline hourly rates for Public Access work range from £150 to £650 plus VAT depending on seniority. A written estimate, or a fixed fee, is given before any instruction is accepted. Timescales depend on the barrister's availability and, for court work, on listing; the clerks will give an indication when you first contact them.
This information is published in accordance with the Bar Standards Board's Transparency Rules.
