Asset tracing

Between a stack of bank statements and a marital balance sheet there is a lot of patient reading. We do the reading: every transfer followed, every account linked, every unexplained movement listed, with the page reference that proves it.

What you receive

A traced asset schedule linking transactions to accounts, with the paper trail documented.

  • A reconciled schedule of accounts and assets identified across the disclosure
  • Transaction tracing showing funds moving between accounts, with dates and amounts
  • Transfers to third parties and unexplained withdrawals flagged with their statement pages
  • Separate versus marital characterisation inputs, showing the documentary basis for each
  • A list of accounts referenced in the documents but never produced
  • A source-and-application summary for the period under review

What it costs, and what it replaces

Both figures are published ranges for the same unit of work. Ours is fixed before we start; if our process gets faster, that is our gain and your price does not move.

How the work runs

  1. 01

    Account inventory

We build an inventory of every account that appears anywhere in the documents, including accounts that appear only as the other side of a transfer and were never disclosed.

  2. 02

    Transaction tracing

Transfers are followed across accounts and matched on date and amount, so money leaving one account is connected to the account it entered rather than simply disappearing.

  3. 03

    Characterisation inputs

Where separate property is claimed, we lay out the documentary trail supporting or undermining it, including commingling events, with the pages that show each.

  4. 04

    Gap and delivery pass

The schedule is delivered with a list of what is missing: statement months never produced, accounts referenced but not disclosed, and transfers with no matching deposit.

What we need from you

  • Bank, brokerage and credit statements as produced
  • Tax returns for the relevant years
  • The disclosure or discovery responses listing claimed assets
  • The date of marriage and separation, and the tracing period you want covered

What we check before delivery

  • Every traced transaction cites the statement page on both the outgoing and incoming side
  • Totals are re-added and reconciled against the statements rather than carried forward
  • Unmatched transfers are reported as unmatched rather than assumed to be reconciled
  • Characterisation is presented as documentary evidence, never as a legal conclusion

When firms send us this

  • Divorces where the disclosure does not match the lifestyle
  • Matters too small to justify a forensic accountant but too complex to eyeball
  • Preparing for a deposition on financial issues
  • Testing the other side's claimed separate-property tracing

Questions about asset tracing

  • Is this forensic accounting?

No. It is documentary tracing prepared as a work product for the engaging attorney: what the statements show, where money went, and what is missing. Where a case needs a testifying expert, this is what shortens their engagement.

  • What if statements are missing?

Missing periods are listed explicitly with the account and months involved, which is usually a productive discovery request in itself.

  • How far back can you trace?

As far as the documents allow. Tell us the period and we will tell you where the trail breaks and what would be needed to continue it.
