Cross-practice legal support

Fully pipelined

Contract abstraction and metadata extraction

Every diligence exercise, CLM migration and portfolio review needs the same thing: structured data pulled out of unstructured agreements, at volume, accurately. This is the highest-leverage service we run and our lowest unit cost against the internal alternative.

How we actually produce this

Our pipeline produces the deliverable end to end. A qualified lawyer samples the output and signs it before it leaves us.

The pipeline is ours. It was built for legal work rather than adapted from a general product, which is why the price for this service is a published number instead of an hourly estimate.

Why this work leaves a firm
Every diligence exercise, CLM migration, and portfolio review requires the same thing: structured data pulled out of unstructured agreements, at volume, accurately.
What our pipeline does
We extract to your schema rather than ours. Parties, dates, term, renewal mechanics, payment terms, liability caps, indemnities, assignment, change of control, termination rights, governing law, and any custom field you specify. Values are normalised so that dates, currencies and durations are comparable across the population. Every extracted value carries a citation to the source clause, and anomalies against the population are flagged.
Where a lawyer steps in
Review of every flagged anomaly and every low-confidence record.
What it changes
This is our highest-leverage service and typically our lowest unit cost against internal alternatives. Populations that would take a month of paralegal time come back in a week at roughly a quarter of the cost.

What you receive

A structured dataset in your format, with a source excerpt and a confidence score behind every field.

Volume brackets apply above 100 contracts. Where the population is a single standard form, the unit price sits at the bottom of the range; heavily negotiated bespoke agreements sit at the top. Poor scans are sampled before we quote.

  • A structured dataset in your schema and your file format, ready to load rather than ready to reformat
  • A source excerpt behind every extracted field, so any value can be checked without opening the contract
  • A confidence score per record, and per field where the field is one you told us matters
  • An anomaly report flagging agreements that deviate from the portfolio norm
  • An exceptions list of everything routed to a human rather than extracted automatically
  • A coverage report showing which fields were found, which were absent, and where the document was silent

What it costs, and what it replaces

Both figures are published ranges for the same unit of work. Ours is fixed before we start; if our process gets faster, that is our gain and your price does not move.

How the work runs

  1. 01

    Agree the schema

The schema is the deliverable's contract. We agree the fields, their types and their edge cases in writing first - what counts as the term date on an auto-renewing agreement is a decision, not a lookup.

  2. 02

    Calibration batch

We abstract a calibration set and send it back before running the population. You correct it, the corrections fold into the schema, and a disagreement about definitions stops being a re-run of 4,000 contracts.

  3. 03

Extract at volume with source binding

The full population runs through the pipeline. Every field carries the excerpt it came from and a confidence score; anything below the threshold routes to a human queue instead of into your dataset.

  4. 04

    Exception resolution, QC and delivery

A qualified lawyer works the exception queue and scores a statistical sample. The dataset is delivered with the sample's agreement rate, the anomaly report and the exceptions list.

What we need from you

  • The contract population, in whatever form you hold it - native, scanned, or exported from a system
  • The fields you want extracted, or a sample abstract you want matched if you have no written schema
  • Any portfolio norms or standard forms, which is what the anomaly report is scored against
  • The destination format, if the data is going into a CLM or a diligence database

What we check before delivery

  • A statistical sample is scored on every population and the agreement rate is published to you
  • Every field is traceable to a source excerpt, so a spot check never requires reopening the contract
  • Low-confidence extractions are routed to a person rather than delivered with a caveat
  • Anomalies against your portfolio norm are surfaced rather than normalised into the dataset

When firms send us this

  • CLM migration, where a system is only as good as the data loaded into it
  • Diligence on a contract population under a closing timetable
  • Portfolio review after an acquisition, a policy change or a regulatory event
  • Answering a question across hundreds of agreements that nobody can currently answer at all

Questions about contract abstraction and metadata extraction

  • What accuracy should we expect at this price?

We publish the agreement rate from a scored sample on every population rather than asking you to take accuracy on faith, and where it falls below the standard agreed at the start we re-run the affected records at our cost.

  • Can you use our existing abstract template?

Yes, and it is the better starting point. Send a completed abstract you were happy with and we reverse the schema out of it, then confirm the edge cases with you before running.

  • What happens to fields the contract does not address?

They are reported as absent rather than inferred. A silent contract and a contract that says nothing useful are different facts, and collapsing them is how abstraction datasets become untrustworthy.
